Character and Personal Learning

As a school, we are deeply committed to nurturing our students to become well-rounded, responsible citizens of the future. Central to this is the development of a broad range of values, knowledge, skills and understanding that equip students to participate positively in their community, both now and throughout their lives.

Character and Personal Learning

A key element of this provision is delivered through our Character and Personal Learning (CPL) programme. This is delivered through the PSHE, Citizenship and the Tutor Time programme and includes topics such as bullying, online safety, mental and physical health, politics and citizenship, financial education, careers, relationships and equality. As these lessons are not externally examined, students regularly complete peer- and self-assessment activities. Each term concludes with a summative quiz and student survey, allowing us to assess understanding, gather feedback and continually refine and improve our curriculum.

Character Education, Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development and the British Values

At Abbey Manor College we take every opportunity in the curriculum to embed spiritual, moral, social, and cultural learning throughout all that we do.

Students are actively encouraged to debate and examine their beliefs and moral understandings in relation to wider issues of culture, faith and equality. This is not simply restricted to RE, but across the wider curriculum through all subjects, from examining different cultures and key historical events within Humanities, artists and artwork in Art, and moral and ethical decisions faced within Science and more.

Each week, assembly on Monday introduces the Thought of the Week which explore our school values along with the British Values and other key social and cultural values and concepts including Diversity, Equality and Mental Health, whilst also providing opportunity for us to mark and reflect on national and global days of significance.

Students also develop their character, spiritual, moral, social and cultural thinking and understanding of British Values by participating in our wide ranging and extensive enrichment and extracurricular programme through the Abbey Manor Charter. This encourages students to participate in a wide range of activities both within school but also within their local community.
