Our Student Voice
“You get out what you put in. It’s as simple as that. The monotony of long runs is mental torture… but I had to keep going.” – Dame Kelly Holmes
Student Voice at Abbey Manor College gives students the opportunity to express their views on school issues and lead positive change that benefits the College and the wider community too. We believe that students have an important contribution to make to school life, and that being involved in Student Voice is a valuable part of their development as confident, responsible and engaged young people.
Student Voice includes both Ambassadors and Class Leaders, ensuring that students from all year groups are represented and that a diverse range of perspectives are heard. Members meet regularly to discuss issues raised by their peers and work collaboratively with staff to decide on the most appropriate actions.

A recent example of Student Voice in action involved students preparing to visit a school in The Gambia.
They wanted to raise money to provide books and pens for the pupils they would meet, so they campaigned for a non-uniform day, inviting all staff and students to take part in exchange for a £1 donation. The students successfully persuaded the Headteacher to support the event, and their campaign raised enough funds to provide supplies for every student at the school in The Gambia. The community they supported was extremely grateful - proving that the effort you put in truly makes an impact.

Jack Petchey Achievement Award
In addition to representing student views, Student Voice at Abbey Manor College also celebrates the achievements and successes of our students through the Jack Petchey Achievement Award. This nationally recognised award celebrates outstanding young people across London and Essex.
Nominations are made by staff and winners are selected based on their achievements, dedication and positive contribution to school life.
Award winners receive a certificate and prize, as well as a £250 grant which they can donate to the College to support projects that enhance the student experience. In the past, winners have used the grant to fund new library books, textbooks, sports equipment, or reward trips for their tutor group. Winners are also invited to a prestigious awards evening to receive a medallion in front of their friends and family.

Young Mayor of Lewisham
Abbey Manor College is a proud participant in the Young Mayor of Lewisham scheme, which provides a platform for young people’s voices to be heard by local decision-makers.
Lewisham has the longest-established Young Mayor programme in the country, launched in 2004, and it serves as a model for other councils in creating opportunities for young people to influence their communities.
In collaboration with the Young Mayor of Lewisham Office, we offer students the opportunity to attend some of the fantastic events run by the Young Mayor’s team at the Catford Civic Suite.
