These courses will enable you to understand the importance of food safety and hygiene. You will also study nutrition and diet and learn to plan healthy menus.
You will be encouraged to work as a team in the kitchen and prepare and cook lunches for students and staff at Abbey Manor College as well as planning and adapting some of your own recipe ideas.
During the year you will build up a log of practical work and research recipes to demonstrate different practical skills. You will also produce a portfolio of work showing underpinning knowledge. Both these pieces of work will be internally assessed. At the end of the year you will take an external written exam set by the examining body.
The course will include visits to local food markets, exhibitions and a chance to enter competitions.
Progression routes include NVQ 3 Food Preparation and Cooking or Level 3 in Hospitality. These lead to various courses at university such as Hospitality, Nutrition, Culinary Arts and careers in restaurants, hotels and the food industry.
